BURLINGTON — Standing in front of a tower of Korean grapes, restaurateur Jae Chung surveys the new H Mart. “Wow! Now I won’t have to drive to New Jersey,’’ he says. Opened last month — the first one in New England — this H Mart is the 30th store for the New Jersey-based chain owned by Korean businessmen. It began in 1982 and at this point moves into a region in a big way. The footprint is the size of a football field. The store combines elements of Asian and American supermarkets, department store-type concessions, and a food court anchored by a French Asian bakery. Some customers look like they’re participating in a supermarket sweepstakes race. Carts are piled high with boxes threatening to topple over. All Asian cuisines are represented here but Korean products dominate. Still, the fresh food is abundant: meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, and prepared foods.

Since it opened its doors, H Mart has been jammed. (H stands for hanahreum, literally “armful’’; the company says it means “love and care for the customers.’’) The tall, slim Chung, 46, who owns several Jae’s enterprises in Boston and Western Massachusetts, is drawn to the store, to the bins of spicy kimchi, crocks of salted seafood, sacks of grains. Chung is touring the mega-market to explain ingredients and tell us how he’d cook them. One of his chefs, Yeong Sohn, joins us.

Prezza (Updated Post)
>> Sunday, November 01, 2009

We went to Prezza again last week with the in-laws. After noting that my previous review had no pictures (gasp!!! . .forgive me, it 2007 when I just started this blog after taking the bar exam!) I decided it was time for an updated review.

Just a little bit of background. Prezza, named after the ancient Italian town where Chef Anthony Caturano's grandmother was born, is a modern Italian restaurant that focuses on local, fresh seasonal ingredients prepared with an Old World style.

Prezza has an incredible wine list, boasting over 8000 bottles from over 900 labels. Not being a wine connoisseur, I can't really comment much about their wines except to say that the wine the waiter picked out for us was quite enjoyable.

Prezza is definitely one of the more expensive and classy restaurants in the North End. Appetizers range between $15-$16, pastas are around $15 for an appetizer portion or around $30 for an entree portions. The meat entrees range between $25 and $44.

During our most recent visit, the food was excellent, as was the service and the ambiance. We purposely brought our in-laws here because they LOVE Italian, and we wanted them to experience the best in the North End (We also took them to Mamma Maria and Mike's Pastry while they were visiting Boston).

Please enjoy some pictures from our meal. :)
Fried Egg over roasted wild mushroom crostini with grilled onions $15
I absolutely loved this appetizer. The barely runny yolk, once broken, serves as a lovely, creamy binder that brings the entire dish together. The wild mushrooms had a wonderful, woody flavor and were flavored just right with a little bit of salt. The entire dish was fantastic.

Butternut Squash Arancini, lobster, mascarpone, brown butter and sage $15
An interesting, creative autumn twist on an old, traditional favorite. Well done.

The vintage driftwood lamp was $1,700 at Gray Gardens, an antiques store in Stamford, Conn. It sits on a set of orange lacquer nesting tables that were $325 at West Elm. (West Elm no longer carries them, but it does have a set of two parallel nesting tables in cinnabar, for $199, which would work as an alternative.) “Design can be mass market,” Mr. Groves said. More Photos >

Do you know these Double-click Tricks in Excel?

in Excel Howtos | Learn Excel on June 12th, 2009

Most of us think of mastering formulas, learning macros and being supergood with charts when we think of being productive with spreadsheets. But often learning simple stuff like keyboard shortcuts, using mouse and working with menus and ribbons can be a huge productivity booster for us. So as part of this installment of spreadcheats we will learn 7 very cool and effective double click tricks in excel. (as an aside, try saying double click tricks several times faster… )

Double Click on the Office Button / Logo to Close Excel

This is simple. Displays “do you want to save…” dialog if the workbook is not saved.

Adjust column widths by selecting multiple columns and double clicking on the separators

This is my favorite. You can use the same trick to adjust row heights too.

Double-click in the corner, just above scroll-bar to include a split

It is surprising that very few people know about split and freeze panes feature in excel. I have often seen colleagues struggling to freeze top row of a large workbook or include a split so that they can see 2 different things at a time.

You can also create a vertical split by clicking on the little bar shape next to horizontal scroll-bar near bottom right corner of the excel window.

(If you are wondering where the split would be created, it will be created at selected cell’s row (or column))

Double click on ribbon menu names to collapse ribbon to get more space

In MS Office 2007 you can double click on the ribbon menus to collapse the ribbon to one line. In Excel 2003, when you double click on the empty space in the toolbar area, it opens up the “customize” window (same as Menu > tools > customize)

Auto-fill a series of cells with data or formulas by just double clicking

I have saved countless minutes ever since I learned this little trick. Lets say you have a table where in one column you have some data and in the next you have written a formula in the first row. Now...

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice plus lime wedge, for garnish

In my experience it’s also more satisfying, and not just when a platter of grilled lamb or a slab of crispy glazed pork belly is brought to the table still smelling of oak and applewood. It’s the theater of building a fire out of split logs, and cooking over it. It’s steaming open clams in a caldron set directly on the flames, or charring fennel on a cast-iron griddle, or lowering a grill over a shallow pile of glowing coals for a steak gently seared to medium-rare. Grilling over hardwood is sweaty, smoky, eye-stinging work, but it’s fun.

Not quite. If we were in Argentina, I would draft my friends to help me grill a whole cow, which is one of the recipes in “Seven Fires: Grilling the Argentine Way” (Artisan, 2009) by Francis Mallmann, the chef and owner of Patagonia Sur, the celebrated Buenos Aires restaurant, and Peter Kaminsky, the Brooklyn-based writer. Welcome to Scup’s in the Harbor Restaurant

For those of you who don’t know us… we were the owners of Emma’s Pizza in Cambridge for 10 years. One afternoon about 7 years ago we were going out for a walk and to our surprise there was a small wet creature sprawled across the camel that our tug was tied up to. For those of you who may not know this, a camel is a very large (about 3 ft in diameter) pipe that fits between the dock and the boat to serve the purpose of a float… at least I think that is how you describe it… anyways it is very big and sticks out of the water quite a bit.

Our guess is that this little creature fell off a freighter in the harbor and swam to our tugboat, managed to pull himself up onto the camel and lay there waiting for a miracle.

A miracle did happen (we brought him to Animal Rescue and then ended up adopting him ourselves) and we are now the proud owners of Scup. We named him after the fish in the ocean since that is where he came from. He soon became the mascot of the Shipyard and Marina and when a restaurant space became available in the Shipyard, they asked us if we wanted to run it. So that is why we call the place Scup’s in the Harbor since the restaurant is directly in front of where we found him.

Last August we opened the restaurant serving bre...

Over the course of several months beginning October 2008 to April 2009 I’ve spent some of my spare time between commercial projects searching Google Maps hoping to discover land formations or buildings resembling letter forms. These are the results of my findings limited within the state of Victoria, Australia.

Welcome to Karls!

Since 1958, Karls Sausage Kitchen & European Market has been producing European style sausages, cold cuts and charcuterie in Saugus, Massachusetts.

Originally founded by Karl Engel in 1958, the kitchen today continues to use the same old world recipes and the finest meats and spices to make authentic European sausages, cold cuts and smoked meats. We smoke our sausages, bacon and pork chops on site daily. You can smell and taste the difference!
