Now, bear in mind that Conficker is just one family of bot programs out of dozens currently being used today by malicious hackers to remotely control infected systems. But for the moment, let's use IBM's Conficker numbers, and assume that 4 million Oprah viewers were to install and run three very easy-to-use programs -- say Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, and Trend Micro's Housecall online virus scanner.

I mention the first two tools because they almost always bring immediate results when someone complains to me about PC slowness, browser hijackers, and other computer maladies. I recommend an online virus scanner like Trend because it is free and does not interfere with any anti-virus software that may already be installed on a participant's machine.

HijackThis stands alone in this Hive Five as being the least automated yet most likely to completely wreck your system if used incorrectly. HijackThis does a comprehensive scan of the state of your computer and reports back an enormous log file. The tool makes no judgement on whether or not an application, browser modification, or registry entry is malicious or not. It simply generates a list of things that could have been potentially altered or tampered with by spyware, malware, or other malicious programs. Advanced users can look over the log themselves and determine what needs to be pruned. If you're not comfortable doing that, your best bet is to take the log file to a popular security forum like BleepingComputer or SpywareInfoForum and ask their armies of knowledgeable volunteer malware slayers to comb over it for you. Alternately, while not a replacement for receiving expert help from people in the forums, HijackThis.de is a web-based HijackThis log reader which is updated nightly. You upload your log file, it scans the file for relevant entries and gives you links to articles on how to remove the malware found in the log.

If you're switching to another antivirus program, you have to remove the old one. The problem is that to remove either Norton of McAfee, you need a blowtorch (I hear C-4 plastic explosives is also needed on Norton's Live Update). [Private note to Brendon: I know, I never let up.]

Try AppRemover, a free tool that's designed to find and rip out every last portion of your security applications. It removes other antivirus programs as well.

If that doesn't work, try the Norton Removal Tool (also known as the AutoFix Tool). It effectively yanks out every shred of -- get ready -- every Norton product on your PC (from versions 2003 through 2009). That's right, it's dopey, and you're stuck reinstalling the specific Norton tools you want to keep. And for McAfee, I suggest you watch its Flash tutorial for a sense of how to use their removal tool.

Your nominees in the best-antivirus category

Since I received so much reader feedback, I'm not going to let it go to waste. I hereby declare the following to be your completely nonscientific, highly biased, totally reader-selected nominees for best-of-breed security software.

Number one on the list of components readers care about is antivirus software. I received recommendations for 13 different AV products. The most popular was ESET's NOD32, the second-most popular was Comodo AntiVirus, and tied for third were PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition and AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. All four programs have free versions except NOD32, which has a 30-day free trial.

Favorite software firewalls come down to two

A handful of readers took the time to comment on their choices for best software firewall. The most popular — Comodo Internet Security — is free and includes the company's antivirus engine as well. The free ZoneAlarm Firewall was also lauded by one reader, but two others told us of their problems with the program.

Windows Vista and XP SP2 and later come with a basic firewall that's better than no firewall at all, but not much. (I don't consider earlier versions of the Windows Firewall workable because of these versions' terrible interfaces.)

Familiar names cited as best spyware fighters

I received more nominations for anti-spyware tools than I did firewall recommendations. This may reflect the growing number of spyware threats assaulting our systems.

Spybot Search & Destroy is a free tool supporting every version of Windows back to Windows 95. A couple of readers complained about the newest tools not running on old operating systems, which is why I point this out.
Windows Defender is a free tool from Microsoft that requires Windows Genuine Advantage to download and use.
The veteran system tweakers who comprise a large percentage of our readership clearly say they're not well served by any all-in-one security suite. Most of you have tried different suites or antivirus programs over the years and have a strong opinion about which security mix you prefer. A security suite is a no-brainer, no-hassle option intended for folks who don't want the bother of investigating all the standalone possibilities.

The biggest problems readers reported with the product are difficult installation, poor malware detection, and Symantec support personnel trying to charge U.S. $99 to troubleshoot installation woes or help remove a piece of malware. Readers who got the suite installed without incident do report, however, that the reviewers' claims of performance gains in the new version are accurate.

New Firefox extension beats McAfee SiteAdvisor

By Ian "Gizmo" Richards

As WS contributing editor Mark Edwards reported in his Feb. 12 Top Story, serious doubts have arisen about the accuracy of McAfee's popular SiteAdvisor security service, which is designed to help you avoid hostile Web sites.

I'll tell you about a free SiteAdvisor alternative that offers more reliable safety ratings — and many more features, to boot.

An aggregation of site-rating services

LinkExtend is a free Firefox extension that works similarly to SiteAdvisor, with one big difference. The browser add-on uses scoring from eight site-rating services, only one of which is SiteAdvisor. In addition to security ratings, LinkExtend tells you whether sites are suitable for family viewing and also gives you an indication of each site's ethics, popularity, and more.

LinkExtend is available only as an add-on for Firefox, so Internet Explorer users are out of luck. The fact that the program is available from the official Firefox add-on site is comforting; you can be assured that the download contains no spyware or malware. Equally comforting is the fact that LinkExtend is an open-source app, so the program code is available for all to see. And if you want even more comfort, you'll notice that users give LinkExtend 5 stars, which is the highest-possible rating.

Installation is as simple as clicking the Add to Firefox button. The file is only 433KB, so it should download quickly. Once installed, restart Firefox to activate LinkExtend. Firefox displays a new search toolbar, as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1. The LinkExtend toolbar (shown here in two halves) adds many security features to the Firefox browser.

The search box on the left side of the toolbar uses the Ixquick metasearch engine that combines the results from many of the major search engines. This search function has some nifty features for power searches, but frankly — for normal day-to-day searching — I prefer Google.

Fortunately, using Google is not a problem, because LinkExtend also an...

Finding the sweet spot of security suites

The picks here contrast with those of a later survey (2nd item below).

From my point of view, the most important criterion for selecting a security suite is whether the program includes all the components you need.

Nearly all of the top-rated security suites provide a firewall and a range of anti-malware tools. The programs are differentiated by their auxiliary security components. For example, youngsters and inexperienced users may require first-rate Web-content filtering and antiphishing tools. More-experienced PC users may find such features less important.

In terms of which programs offer the best virus detection, I'm afraid the days of ranking an antivirus engine the best because of an advantage of a few percentage points in detection tests are over. It never was a really useful measurement. The myth that an antivirus app will protect you from the latest infections is even less credible now.

The sheer volume of new malware has outstripped the ability of AV vendors to create and distribute their virus-definition updates. No security program made today can prevent all PC infections. The virus-detection rates of the top-rated apps are so similar, it makes sense to give a little more weight to the tools' design, performance, and range of features. A tool people can't understand and use is no protection to them at all.

Symantec's easy-to-use Norton suite is a solid performer overall. BitDefender's package is a great value, while Avira beat all competitors in malware detection.

Your security suite is an important component of your overall PC-security strategy, but it's not the only one. A minimal security configuration for a PC also calls for a hardware firewall, a means of frequently updating all of your applications, and a secure Web browser. (Laptops don't ordinarily use hardware firewalls and must rely on the personal-firewall features of an installed software suite.)
Windows Secrets writers periodically analyze the ratings of trusted reviewers and summarize for you in the WS Security Baseline which personal-protection products are currently getting the best marks. Based on reviews from PC World, PCMag, Maximum PC, and others, today's security-suite winner is Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2009 (photo at right).

In the MX-V system, malware is executed in a virtual Windows environment that mimics many of the core Windows functions -- registry, file system, internet connection, mouse clicks, etc. The actions of the malware are then analyzed for behavioral characteristics common to malware, or to look for certain malware signatures. By analyzing malware in this fashion, VIPRE is able to detect many types of malware without the necessity of creating a constant stream of dedicated unpackers and signatures for each variant of a piece of malware.

I tested a number of free rootkit detectors for Windows XP and Windows Vista, and my clear favorite is F-Secure's Blacklight, which combines thorough system scanning with the familiar interface reminiscent of a standard antivirus program.

On the other hand, do-it-yourself types will find plenty to like in GMER. The utility offers fine-grained control over which files it scans, and it produces detailed reports of your system's processes, files, Registry entries, and other rootkit-related information.

Trend Micro's Rootkit Buster beta is similar to Blacklight, but the program's scans are suspiciously brief.

...

I ran the three rootkit scanners on two different PCs: one running Windows XP and the other Vista. Since none of the programs found anything dangerous on either system, I wasn't able to test their rootkit-removal skills, which generally involve renaming or deleting the problem files and processes they discover.

Fortunately, German research group AV-Test recently completed an exhaustive test of more than 20 rootkit-removal tools of all types. Mark Joseph Edwards' PC-Tune-Up column in this week's issue describes those results.
