Tech Cadre Meeting Notes

December 17, 2009

1. Goal: Have everyone watch the Inauguration on January 20, 2009

Tuesday after MLK holiday - 10 AM

2. We're going to be getting 18 new computers that the district has purchased.

What should we do?

My proposal: Give 1 new one to 3-6 grade teachers, so they all have 3. For those that have 3, we'll take one of the older ones and give them to Newkirk, Jaquez, and Amezcua.

3. Order cameras and camcorders. Every cadre member is going to get a camcorder. Do you need a camera? Get one if your grade level does not have one. Hulburt, Gamboa, A. Hernandez, Herrera - cameras.

4. Signed yearbook agreement. We have 203 commitments. We ordered 225 copies. They're a little over $20. We'll do some training on the yearbook software early 2009 at an early release.

5. Campus Server clean-up. Almost all files (except for Lexia, Lesson Plans, Edgemere Programs and one or two) will be moved to an Archive folder. If there's files you keep for backup on there, you can move them back to the Teacher folder. At the end of the school year, I'll burn a DVD with all the files that are left and remove them from the Server.

6. There's a different way to connect to the YISDWANSSSID wireless network on the Mac side. Everyone who's been able to connect in the last month has either been connected by Ethernet or EDGESSSID. With this change, you can still connect that way, but if you want to connect wirelessly at Central Office or another YISD school, you must have YISDWANSSID reconfigured. I'm going to test this tomorrow to see if this can be done without the admin password.

7. We're at 100% on the StarChart, everyone's finished the grant survey and most of our webpages exceed expectations. Great job everyone!

8. Reactions to December trainings. What are we going to do for January? The Cadre decided to do the trainings the same as December. They would be held by grade level, grade levels will decide what they want to work on.

2. Technology Time - Cadre recommended that Technology sessions be allowed to meet by grade levels and have people available in the library for help

3. Signing up for the COWS - An concern was raised of people signing up in advance for the COWS and times weren't available for others. Sometimes they sign up for it and don't use it. People are asked to be more careful about that. Asked for more recommendations.

To to Go > Connect to Server

Fill in 10.107.4.31

Enter teacher/mentor and click Connect.

Go to Teacher folder and find lesson plan folder. Look for your grade level, then find your name.

Drag your lesson plan file into your folder.

Updating Classroom Computers for AR

I'm going to be reimaging all the eMacs because I can also upgrade the OS to 10.4 at the same time. The older snow iMacs I'm not because they can't be upgraded. So for those computers, here's how to change them for the new AR.

1. Log out of the student account.

2. Log in as the teacher.

3. Go to the applications folder and put the Accelerated Reader and Star Reading folders in the trash. Empty the trash.

4. Go to System Preferences. Click on Accounts. Click on the Student Account and go to the Limitations pane. Click the checkbox in front of Modify the dock.

5. Somewhere in this process it may ask you if you can install updates. Give your permission. Leave it for a few minutes. When it's done, click Install.

6. When the updates are done installing, restart the computer. If there were no updates, you can restart the computer right away.

7. It will start up in the student account. Take the AR and Star icons out of the Dock (and anything else your class doesn't use.)

8. Click on Firefox or whichever browser your class is going to use. Go to the Accelerated Reader website login page. Save it to your Bookmarks Bar.

9. Log out of the student account.

10. Log in as the teacher.

11. Go to System Preferences. Click on Accounts. Click on the Students Account and go to the Limitations pane again. Uncheck the box in front of Modify the dock.

12. You're done. You can now log out of the Teacher account.

Computer Lab Rules

1. Follow Mr. Mattson's and your teacher's directions

2. Don't risk hurting yourself or others. Keep your hands to yourself and don't run in the computer lab.

3. Respect the work being done. Don't disturb people who are working or interrupt what they're doing.

4. Stay focused on the task you've come to the computer lab to do. Only go to websites you've been given permission to go to.

5. Follow safe Internet practices.

Students who do not follow these rules will be asked to leave the computer lab and may lose computer privileges. Students who go to inappropriate websites or post inappropriate material will receive an office referral.

Notes: You have no assurance of privacy when you're on a computer at Edgemere.
