A team of biologists and chemists is closing in on bringing non-living matter to life.

It's not as Frankensteinian as it sounds. Instead, a lab led by Jack Szostak, a molecular biologist at Harvard Medical School, is building simple cell models that can almost be called life.

Szostak's protocells are built from fatty molecules that can trap bits of nucleic acids that contain the source code for replication. Combined with a process that harnesses external energy from the sun or chemical reactions, they could form a self-replicating, evolving system that satisfies the conditions of life, but isn't anything like life on earth now, but might represent life as it began or could exist elsewhere in the universe.

While his latest work remains unpublished, Szostak described preliminary new success in getting protocells with genetic information inside them to replicate at the XV International Conference on the Origin of Life in Florence, Italy, last week. The replication isn't wholly autonomous, so it's not quite artificial life yet, but it is as close as anyone has ever come to turning chemicals into biological organisms.

"We've made more progress on how the membrane of a protocell could grow and divide," Szostak said in a phone interview. "What we can do now is copy a limited set of simple [genetic] sequences, but we need to be able to copy arbitrary sequences so that sequences could evolve that do something useful."

By doing "something useful" for the cell, these genes would launch the new form of life down the Darwinian evolutionary path similar to the one that our oldest living ancestors must have traveled. Though where selective pressure will lead the new form of life is impossible to know.

"Once we can get a replicating environment, we're hoping to experimentally determine what can evolve under those conditions," said Sheref Mansy, a former member of Szostak's lab and now a chemi...

A sugar molecule linked to the origin of life was discovered in a potentially habitable region of our galaxy.

The molecule, called glycolaldehyde, was spotted in a large star-forming area of space around 26,000 light-years from Earth in the less-chaotic outer regions of the Milky Way. This suggests the sugar could be common across the universe, which is good news for extraterrestrial-life seekers.

"This is an important discovery as it is the first time glycolaldehyde, a basic sugar, has been detected towards a star-forming region where planets that could potentially harbor life may exist," Serena Viti of University College London said in a press release.

Previously, glycolaldehyde had only been observed toward the center of the galaxy, where conditions are thought to be too extreme to host habitable planets.

Glycolaldehyde is a key ingredient for life. It helps to build Ribonucleic acid (RNA), which is thought to be the central molecule involved in the origin of life on Earth. Glycolaldehyde is a monosaccharide sugar, the basic unit of carbohydrates. It can react with the chemical propenal to form ribose, the building block of RNA.

"The discovery of an organic sugar molecule in a star forming region of space is very exciting and will provide incredibly useful information in our search for alien life,” said Keith Mason, chief executive of the England’s Science and Technology Facilities Council.

The finding, made with the IRAM radio telescope in France, was announced Tuesday and will be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Place meat in a large mixing bowl and create a well in the center of the meat. Fill the well with the bread cubes and dampen them with a splash of milk. Pour 1 beaten egg over bread and add seasoning or salt and pepper, allspice, tomato paste and onion to the bowl.

Combine the meat, bread and grill seasoning or salt and pepper and form mixture into 4 large oval patties 3/4-inch thick. Pan fry meatloaf patties in a nonstick skillet over medium high heat 7 minutes on each side under a loose tin foil tent. The tent will reflect heat and allow the steam to escape the pan.

Cover the quartered, red-skinned potatoes in water in a medium saucepan. Bring water to a boil and cook potatoes 10 minutes or until fork tender. Turn heat under pan off; drain potatoes and return to hot pan and warm stovetop to dry potatoes out. Add butter, sour cream, scallions, and milk to potatoes and smash to your desired consistency. Season potatoes with salt, to taste.

Remove meat loaf patties to a platter and return pan to heat. Reduce heat to medium and add butter and onion to your skillet. Cook the onion 2 minutes and sprinkle pan with flour. Cook flour 1 minute and whisk in 1 cup beef stock. Bring broth to a bubble. If gravy i...

Refining Tennis's Rebel King

Ahead of the U.S. Open

Turns out sleeveless shirts and calf-length shorts aren't, in fact, fit for a king.

It has been quite a summer for Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal. First came the epic five-set victory over rival Roger Federer at Wimbledon. Then he struck gold in Beijing. Last week, he made his ascension official, displacing Mr. Federer as the top-ranked player in the world.

Rafael Nadal's management team is shifting the Spanish tennis star's on-court wardrobe to more grown-up attire.

Now, as Mr. Nadal sets his sights on the U.S. Open, the hunky rebel known for his muscle shirts, capri-length pants and bandanna will morph into more of a traditionalist, starting with his on-court wardrobe. The shift appears part of a larger strategy by Mr. Nadal's tight-knit management team to transform the sublime baseliner from a teenage heartthrob into a grown-up star.

Since his win at Wimbledon in July, Mr. Nadal's visibility and marketing potential have risen significantly, and his managers say the older look will allow him to emerge as the kind of sports-marketing force that befits the best tennis player on the planet. "Rafa will have a new image at the U.S. Open," said Carlos Costa, an agent with IMG Worldwide, who represents Mr. Nadal. In the past, Mr. Nadal, who is known as much for his sartorial choices as for his game, has said he has had little input on the design of his clothing. But Mr. Costa said he and the player worked closely with designers at Beaverton, Ore.-based Nike during the past year to come up with a new look.

"It is fair to say that it is more mature," Nike spokesman Kilee Hughes said of the new on-court look Mr. Nadal will sport for the first time when the U.S. Open begins Monday in Flushing Meadows, in the Queens borough of New York City. The shift comes with certain risks, even for what is perhaps the world's best marketing c...

Take your time. It’s okay. That photo of Rafael Nadal on the back cover of this magazine is undeniably … what’s a polite way to put it? Arresting. The mussed locks curled just so above the shoulders. The biceps curved like a particularly ripe aubergine. The shadows playing across the deeply grooved abs. All demand extended scrutiny.

Federer and Nadal, in many ways, are perfect foils. All-court finesse versus baseline power, fluid grace versus relentless will, Swiss precision versus Majorcan passion. And that opposition extends to their sense of style. Even if you’ve never watched a minute of their epic matches, a single glance at, say, the photo of them posing at net before the Wimbledon 2008 final would tell you all you needed to know. Federer wears a herringbone-patterned cashmere cardigan, emblazoned with a royal RF logo, and loose white shorts; Nadal is in a sporty sleeveless Nike-emblazoned top and shorts so long they’re practically Capris.

Spaniard Rafael Nadal ascended to the No. 1 position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings on Monday by replacing his great rival Roger Federer of Switzerland, who had held the top spot for a record 237 consecutive weeks (since February 2, 2004).

Nadal, who had ranked No. 2 behind Federer for a record 160 consecutive weeks (since July 25, 2005), guaranteed himself the World No. 1 ranking after reaching the semifinals earlier this month at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati.

But Nadal celebrated his rise to No. 1 in perfect fashion yesterday, winning the Olympic singles gold medal in Beijing.

"Nowhere in my best dreams I can imagine something like what I did this year," Nadal said in Beijing Sunday. "I am playing an unbelievable season, no doubt. I have to be very happy for everything.

"The feeling for sure is very happy for being No. 1, but the feeling doesn't change too much because the last years I did very well too. It is a satisfaction... I want to enjoy these two days probably, but later I have to be focused on New York [for the US Open, which begins August 25]."

He joins countrymen Carlos Moya (1999) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (2003) to rank No. 1. Nadal is also the fifth left-hander to rank No. 1, the first since Chilean Marcelo Rios in 1998.
Federer met his girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec at a lunch table in the Olympic Village eight years ago, back when he was a carefree teenager on a rapid path to greatness. Now weighed down by his own fame and by expectations that demand nothing less than perfection, Federer can’t even prevent the end of his 235-week marriage to the No. 1 ranking at the Beijing Games.

For that he can thank Rafael Nadal, the Spanish youngster who regularly asserts that the Swiss master is the best player ever yet refused to accept that Federer couldn’t be bettered and chased down.

Nadal is what Federer once was – a free spirit who refuses to be satisfied with his own brilliance and constantly looks for more. Whereas Federer felt the level of attention in the village would be too oppressive and has shut himself away in a Beijing hotel room, Nadal talks smack, plays video games and poses for photos with his fellow Olympians.

Evernote. Why it will make it & 20 Awesome Ways to Use It.

A guest post from Zee, the Creative Director at London based digital agency, WeDoCreative

Evernote, make no quibbles about it, has changed the way I store my information &, if it hasn’t already, should be the way it stores yours.

Firstly, what is it? Evernote is a tool which stores notes, documents & images and gives you the ability to be able to access & search them from wherever you are. Still unclear? Here’s a video of Evernote’s CEO Phil Libin giving you a 1 minute run down of his service.

Before we go into why it’s special, here’s a little background, Evernote was initially just a desktop application, a mighty fine one at, but just a desktop application all the same. On June 24th 2008, Evernote went into open beta & open its (virtual) doors to the world as a spanking new online service with desktop versions of the tool for Mac’s & PC’s and mobile versions for windows mobile and now, the iPhone.

So why is it such a special tool you ask…why do I, as well as the majority of other Evernote users have so much passion & faith in the product. Well firstly, the company have been in the information business for a while now, they’ve built a solid reputation & it’s clear they aren’t going to dissapear without a fight. Secondly, they have a loyal user base which has only grown since they’re expansion onto the web. Thirdly, innovation - they have really mastered it & hopefully won’t be losing their touch any time soon.

Lets forget however about the three reasons above and take evernote on face value. Why is it such a great tool? Here are four of the best features it offers:

1. It runs on Mac’s, PC’s, Online & on your iPhone. So no matter where you are, you’ve got access to your information.

2. Evernote can read text in your images So if you’ve got a photo like one I took of a receipt, it will scan it & make it searchable. In this particular example I searched for receipt obiously.

This was supposed to be the year that the debate ended and Roger Federer took his place as the greatest tennis player ever. The Mighty Fed needed simply to sustain his remarkable trajectory and he'd eclipse Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam singles titles. He was on pace to finish his fifth consecutive year with the No. 1 ranking and become the first player since 1888 to win Wimbledon for the sixth straight time. ¶ And so in the last few moments of daylight on Sunday, there was a Centre Court coronation. Only it wasn't for the Swiss stylist; it was for a swashbuckling Spaniard. In a spellbinding men's final that will stand as the benchmark against which all future tennis matches will be measured, Rafael Nadal dethroned Federer 6--4, 6--4, 6--7, 6--7, 9--7. Let's be unequivocal: This was the greatest match ever played.
It also doubled as a four-hour, 48minute infomercial for everything that is right about tennis—a festive display of grace, strength, speed, shotmaking and sportsmanship that crackled with electricity. If this Wimbledon final doesn't improve the sport's relevance quotient, nothing will. While Nadal collapsed onto the court after winning his fourth match point, it was the House of Federer that was brought to its knees after a glorious five-year run. "There is a new king tonight," said a breathless BBC announcer. "We may have to rethink tennis history."
In becoming the first player since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to pull off the spring-summer double—winning on the clay of the French Open and the lawns of Wimbledon—Nadal defied conventional tennis wisdom. It's long been thought that no player relying on high-bouncing topspin and cutting sidespin can thrive at Wimbledon. And it's hard to recall a player ever applying more actio...
