LAS VEGAS, 2008 International CES, Jan. 7, 2008 - Monotype Imaging Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has introduced new multilingual fonts to meet requirements for scalability, style and legibility on consumer electronics devices such as mobile phones, navigation devices and control panel displays.

“We’ve built a wealth of knowledge working with leading consumer electronics device manufacturers worldwide to deliver scalable font solutions capable of performing in tightly constrained development environments,” said John Seguin, executive vice president of Monotype Imaging Inc. “Customers are also realizing that scalable, stylistic fonts can play a positive role toward enriching the user experience. Our new multilingual fonts help remove time-to-market barriers that have slowed the adoption of scalable, aesthetically pleasing fonts in memory-constrained devices.”

WorldType Font Solution
Building on its WorldType® brand of products for multilingual development environments, Monotype Imaging has introduced a WorldType font suite that contains readily available fonts in different world scripts. The fonts can be linked with aesthetically compatible fonts based on the WGL character set for European languages.

“Minimizing time-to-market is often the most critical concern for device manufacturers,” said Geoff Greve, vice president of font development at Monotype Imaging. “Language c...

ESQ Mobile Fonts

ESQ® Mobile™ fonts are typefaces that have undergone optimization and testing procedures to ensure exceptional display quality on mobile phone displays. These fonts are also suitable for use on other consumer electronics or embedded systems. In some cases, characters must be hand-tuned to ensure maximum readability in these environments. Developers of mobile content, user interfaces, applications, games, services and advertising are able to select from a growing variety of distinctive, scalable typefaces fine-tuned for the consumer electronic displays. East Asian ESQ Mobile fonts are SmartHint™-enabled, stroke-based designs.

WorldType® Font Suites for Mobile Devices
WorldType font suites provide a fast and practical solution for offering wide language support on mobile devices. These font suites contain a series of non-Latin font components with aesthetics that are complementary to each other. Font suites are also designed to be aesthetically compatible with a regular and condensed Latin WGL counterpart. The ascenders and descenders of each font component have been adjusted to ensure text alignment between scripts. All components have been height restricted to prevent characters from being clipped when rendered on small displays. Font components offer support for different scripts. They can be linked to each other, to a Latin WGL font or to our East Asian selection to obtain the desired level of language coverage. This allows developers to license and embed only the components they require and use as little memory as possible.

WorldType Font Suite One contains the following components and offers support for the following scripts:

That’s what the iType® font engine offers – even for languages with complex scripts and on devices with small memory size, small screens and low-resolution displays.

Based on the TrueType® and OpenType® font formats, the iType font engine is a scalable font rendering subsystem that brings the benefits of scalable type and high-quality multilingual font display to the embedded environment. The latest release offers enhanced performance flexibility and configurability. Through Monotype Imaging’s Edge™ Technology, OEMs can further enhance the display quality of text, particularly for East Asian scripts, without sacrificing typeface style or undertaking significant increases to font file size. The iType font engine can be easily implemented from various platforms using iType® Connects™ plug-ins, further simplifying the transition from bitmap to scalable fonts and reducing time to market for OEMs.

The iType font engine is ideal for:
• Mobile Phones
• Television set-top boxes
• Interactive TVs
• Navigation devices
• Console displays
• Portable media players
• Camcorders
...Or almost any resource
constrained device

To achieve these benefits:
• Easy-to-read text, even at small sizes
• Properly composed text in the user’s language
• Aesthetically appealing typefaces that
complement on-screen graphics

Packaged as ANSI C code for broad, flexible integration, the iType font engine meets stringent size requirements for any applications and devices, including those that support East Asian languages requiring thousands of characters. Scalable outline or stroke characters are dynamically rendered as bitmaps (single bit) or graymaps (2, 4 or 8 bit), outlines or strokes to the specific size that the application has requested. The font engine scales the outlines or strokes and then fills them in to render the character to the specific size the application has requested. Hinting instructions, if present within the outline or stroke font, are ...

Obsessive compulsives might be trying to figure out what caused the suspicious looking stain on the seat next to them. Me? I’m trying to figure out what font the ad for some community college is set in.

We have a lot of different kinds of nerds at meebo - people who know the difference between Class A and Class B Berkshire Hathaway common stock (finance nerds), people who care deeply about the Oxford comma (grammar nerds), and people who debate the relative merits of Gill Sans and Arial (we, the typography nerds).*

“Fonts” is a pretty obscure thing to be obsessed with, but people who get into it are *really* into it. We have our own website, movie, clothing, and our own hoax. The season premiere of The Office showed a too-elegant-for-her-own-good art professor walk into a full classroom and dryly quip “Sorry I’m late, I accidentally switched my alarm clock setting to Zapf Chancery.” At least one person on the internet didn’t get it, and perhaps the best explanation is that there’s nothing to get—it was really just a meaningless joke that made the typography nerds swoon—we like *any* reference to typography.

Typography draws much of its terminology from The Lost Art of Letterpress - a system of printing where each letter was engraved on a tiny piece of metal, and these pieces had to be painstakingly lined up (backwards) to create pages of text. There’s an entire system of measurement that’s almost exclusive to typography (1 inch = 6 picas = 72 points; ems and ens depend on the size of the font), and entire vocabulary to describe fonts and layout (kern, glyph, serif, dingbat, recto, verso, ligature).

Of course, the easiest option for the broadest catchment area would be to offer the goods such as typefaces for free.
