Evernote offers advanced search syntax to allow you finding notes.

The following Search Grammar is a simple list of terms which are evaluated within a notebook (or "all notebooks") to find a match. By default, the search results are the intersection of the notes that match each individual search term. This behavior changes if the "any:" modifier is found in the search. In this case, the search is executed as a union of the matches of the individual terms, and notes will be returned that match any of the criteria terms. The results are obviously identical if there is only one search term.

String matches are case insensitive, and multiple spaces will compare as if they were a single space.

The search grammar includes a set of advanced search expressions in the form of "modifier:argument". A note will match this expression if the appropriate condition is met. The matching terms vary by the type of the modifier, so that a date may be compared differently than a string.

Any matching term may also be negated by adding a "-" character to the beginning. This means that the term will only match a note if the conditional is NOT true.

Examples:

Find notes containing the word "chicken", tagged with "cooking", and created this year:

You can further narrow your search by selecting one or more tags before typing your search keyword. For example, suppose you have a tag called Business and another tag called Articles that you think might have been assigned to the note you're seeking by the keyword “company”. In this case, before typing the word "company" you might want to choose the Business and Articles tags by clicking on the name Business and then pressing Ctrl+click on the name Articles. Then, when you type the first few letters of the word "company", Evernote will search through only the two tags you have selected.

The same approach applies to searching for a keyword in a collection of Web clips you picked from websites - you would likely want to click on the tag called "Web clips" first, and then type your keyword in the Search Panel. This can significantly reduce the number of notes searched and found.

The Organizer panel contains a section called "Saved Searches". Upon a right-click on the label "Saved Searches", you will see a menu that allows creating a new saved search as shown below:

You will be offered to specify a query that is another name for a keyword typed in the search panel and assign it a meaningful label that helps to remove any ambiguity in case if the query's meaning is not obvious.

Once you click OK, a new line will show up in the Saved Searches. Note that it is grayed out, since it has not been used once.

Once you use this search (by double-clicking on it), it will become black and will have the number of found record on the right, as shown below:

This feature allows using all your previous keyword searches in Evernote, so you can conduct repetitive searches.
