Full-length artist albums can be a tricky business in the world of techno. The minimalist nature of the genre and its relative adherence to a 4/4 rhythm can be a recipe for boredom. Fortunately, this isn't the case with Berlin-based producer Paul Schulleri's debut album, Strich & Faden, on New Yorklabel, Subtrak. This album offers a refreshing take on the techno formula through its engaging melodies, clever sampling and subtle arrangements.

There are two main traps most techno artists fall into when approaching the "artist" album. The first one is an album that is simply a collection of singles. Marcel Dettmann's recent full-length, Dettmann, on Ostgut Tonis a prime example of an album of really great tracks that fails to be more than the sum of its parts. The other trap is the concept album. The music on Luciano's Tribute to the Sunnever reaches the heavenly heights it aspires to; instead of a cohesive voice made up of individual tracks, this album was burdened by trying to be too many things. On Strich & Faden,Schulleri attempts to avoid these pitfalls by providing an intelligent flow to the album coupled with mature production and arrangements.

From the beginning, Schulleri doesn't want to present the obvious with this album. The first track, "Cruel," has an interesting use of melancholic vocal and guitar samples to set the tone for the whole album. From there, the album begins a journey through the realms of minimal techno. Tracks such as "Mondschien Baby" and "Spade" are technical rhythm-driven excursions. Schulleri uses many minute sonic details to build a rhythm up, then as the song is broken back down to its essential elements, new sounds sneak in and take the track into a new direction. The points where Schulleri begins to brush up against progressive techno are perhaps where the music becomes the most compelling. The deep, dreamy chords that appear midway through "Stickmata" offers depth to an otherwise sim...

Waterlog - Swing The Club EP

Some Danish minimalism from 1997 on the Funque Droppings label (me neither), which has the magnificent catalogue number FUD 01.

I'm no fan of golf and have never experienced polo. Most golfers I know tend to be cunts (apart from my dad but he's a 3 rounds a year kinda guy), the sorts from work who get up at the crack of dawn for a round on a Saturday/Sunday morning. Doubt I'd like polo either, seems to be the preserve of overprivileged inbred fannies from what you read about. But - Waterlog obviously disagree, considering the titles involved with this EP.

These two tracks should appeal to anyone who's been digging the Basic Channel / Chain Reaction stuff I've been posting of late.

The two guys involved appear to be big on the Danish minimal scene - I dunno how difficult this would be to achieve as I can't imagine there is that much of a minimal scene in Denmark. Certainly didn't stumble across any on my recent trip to Copenhagen, that's for sure. I have been known to be wrong though - there's no doubt a Basic Channel-style studio lurking somewhere in deepest Christiania that I'm way too out of touch to be aware of...

DJs and producers, Ryan Brogan and Christian Bloch, started Subtrak in 2006 to showcase both their individual work and their collaborations. The duo began working together in the hear of Techno city, Detroit, around 2002 in the form of live performances and DJ sets. This was quickly followed by a release on the Danish Kondi imprint known as AudioRiot, which is now considered by many to be a must have in any Electro collection.

Subtrak’s first release, by Ryan Brogan, rose very quickly on the charts and the 1000 copy limited release sold out overnight. Since moving operations to New York, and after a brief hiatus, the label has founded relationships with a number of well known digital distributors including, Brooklyn’s own halcyondigi.com. The current Subtrak catalog is comprised of twenty three releases to date, and averaging 2 releases a month with new artists being discovered each year, there are no plans of slowing down. Collaborations are currently focused on artists like Derek Marin, The Pale, and SERi who just released his latest EP, Crispy, on the label.

Purveyors of Minimal Techno, Electro, House and Breakbeat, the label is pushing forward in a digital universe; contributing to the next wave of electronic music. And rest assured, they remain true to form and avoid the glitzy hype that plagues DJ culture. The Subtrak crew, including newly appointed label Manager and New York DJ/Promoter, Chris Alker, are returning to the nightlife with their own events in the US and internationally. For now, growing the label and supplying turntable assassins with records that will stand the test of time is their goal.
