Hand contact spreads 80% of infections. For each minute of the work day, you touch an average of 30 objects. There are over 20,000 germs on every square inch of your desk, which is almost 400 times the amount found on toilets. Approximately 3000 bacteria lurk on your hands. Women’s hands harbor a more diverse variety of microbes than those of men.

These unsettling statistics are enough to make germophobes out of us all. But, you can’t very well run to the bathroom every five minutes to wash up. That will get you an interesting reputation around the office. So save yourself some money and help the environment, too, by making your own sanitizers. These antiseptic gels can easily be concocted using basic household items.

In a small bowl, mix ¼ cup each of pure aloe vera gel and grain alcohol with 5 drops of tea tree essential oil. To make it smell less pungent, add 5 drops of your favorite fragrance oil. Using a funnel, pour this blend into a bottle small enough to stash in your purse. (Rinse out an empty tube of makeup or lotion to make use of waste.)

Now, what about your contaminated desk? Don’t even think about buying a can of Lysol! Here’s an all-natural alternative:

Pour ¼ cup each of tea tree essential oil, lavender essential oil and white vinegar into a spray bottle. Add 2 cups of distilled water and shake well. Clean your work space using this blend every evening before you go home to disinfect surfaces.

Cleaning laptop and LCD monitor screens is different from cleaning the usual CRT screens and requires some additional care and safeguards. A large part of this is because the traditional CRT screen is made up of glass, so it is a lot less prone to scratches from dust particles then your LCD screen.

You can follow these steps and guidelines while cleaning your laptop or LCD monitor to keep out of harm’s way and have a sparkling clean screen.

Materials you would need

A soft lint free cotton cloth (microfiber cloth works best).

Distilled Water. Isopropyl Alcohol or white vinegar (if there are oil stains)

A bottle (atomizer bottle works best)

How to Clean Your LCD Monitor

If it is just dust you are getting rid of, distilled water would be sufficient and you don’t need any other cleansing agent. If there are fingerprints on the screen or some oily stains than the best thing to use is a solution of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol. Note that you should NEVER clean off the screen with a dry cloth. This way the dust particles can easily scratch the surface of the screen.

If you are going to need Isopropyl Alcohol, you should make a solution consisting of equal amounts of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol.

You then need to put this solution (or just distilled water if that is the case) into an atomizer bottle.

Spray the contents of the bottle onto the soft lint free cloth, DO NOT spray directly on the screen, make sure that you are holding the cloth away from laptop when spraying. A damp cloth (or perhaps an edge of cloth) is what we are looking for, we don’t need to soak it in the solution.

Gently wipe the screen with the cloth. Horizontal and vertical movements work best, however if there are areas that need a little extra attention or streaks going along the screen, you can concentrate on the area with some circular movements.

What you should not do

Regular expressions are a language of their own. When you learn a new programming language, they're this little sub-language that makes no sense at first glance. Many times you have to read another tutorial, article, or book just to understand the "simple" pattern described. Today, we'll review eight regular expressions that you should know for your next coding project.

Background Info on Regular Expressions

This is what Wikipedia has to say about them:

In computing, regular expressions provide a concise and flexible means for identifying strings of text of interest, such as particular characters, words, or patterns of characters. Regular expressions (abbreviated as regex or regexp, with plural forms regexes, regexps, or regexen) are written in a formal language that can be interpreted by a regular expression processor, a program that either serves as a parser generator or examines text and identifies parts that match the provided specification.

Now, that doesn't really tell me much about the actual patterns. The regexes I'll be going over today contains characters such as \w, \s, \1, and many others that represent something totally different from what they look like.

If you'd like to learn a little about regular expressions before you continue reading this article, I'd suggest watching the Regular Expressions for Dummies screencast series.

The eight regular expressions we'll be going over today will allow you to match a(n): username, password, email, hex value (like #fff or #000), slug, URL, IP address, and an HTML tag. As the list goes down, the regular expressions get more and more confusing. The pictures for each regex in the beginning are easy to follow...

Configuring CalDAV on iPhone 3.0 for Google Calendar

Today, the iPhone 3.0 software update finally came out and about the first thing I did after upgrading mine was to check out the new CalDAV and LDAP functionalities.

This is how I configured CalDAV for Google Calendar:

Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars

Tap "Add Account...", then "Other"

Under Calendars, "Add CalDAV Account"

Enter account information:

Server: www.google.comUser Name: [your username]Password: [your password]Description: [e.g. Personal]

Tap "Next"

That's it! Now you can launch the Calendar app, tap "Calendars", then select the CalDAV calendar. Events can be created or modified on the iPhone and they'll be reflected on the server instantly.

Secondary calendars: This only shows the main calendar. To get your other calendars, you'll need to repeat the above for each (with distinct Descriptions otherwise it'll be confusing), then edit that CalDAV account, and under "Advanced Settings" change the "Account URL". You can get this Account URL by clicking the down arrow next to your calendar at calendar.google.com and selecting "Calendar Settings". You should find your Calendar ID next to the XML, iCal, HTML links in the Calendar Address section. Insert this Calendar ID into an URL like so: https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/ccogk69iprl3zyfa1ijeep0oj5@group.calendar.google.com/user . You can email this to yourself, then leverage the new copy&paste feature of 3.0 to avoid typos. Why is this so cumbersome? Here's a possible explanation.

Offline access: Works in both directions. Changes are sync'd upon network reconnection.

CalDAV or Google Sync? Either way will give you read/write access to your Google Calendar. A major deciding factor is whether you already have an active Exchange account (e.g. for work), since iPhone only allows one Exchange account at any time, and Google Sync uses Exchange ActiveSync protocol.

Do you have a bad road trip story? Join the club. Almost everyone I meet has one, and the ones that don’t have a bad story haven’t been on a road trip, so they don’t count. How do these vacations go wrong? The idea of the open road seemed so inviting when you said to your family or friends, “Hey, I know! Let’s go on a road trip!”

Luckily, things go right as often as they go wrong on road trips. There are spur-of-the-moment pit-stops that turn into vacation highlights, great and creative road trip games that the players still talk about years later, gastronomic dreams-come-true enjoyed in restaurants off the beaten path, and deep bonding moments that permanently alter relationships for the better. I often hear inspiring stories like the one where a mother packed a book of questions as a way of entertaining her kids and found out things about them that changed the entire way she perceived one of her daughters.

Both the good and the bad things help point the way as to how to better plan for great road trips – ones without the backseat bickering, killer boredom, numb legs, broken down or over-packed car, or the feeling that someone you used to love has morphed into someone you can’t stand to spend another minute with.

So, how do you plan a road trip that lives up to your blue skies-open road kick-butt fantasies – one that will go down in time as your favorite vacation ever?

Choose Wisely
If you can choose who you’re traveling companions will be, choose wisely. It’s amazing how often people who barely know each other or who frequently argue will decide to go on a road trip together. Road trips are the ultimate litmus test of compatibility – being in a car together day after day can test even the strongest of bonds. Pick travel buddies who you’re very sure will be a good match to your personality and travel style.

Where are we heading?
Select a destination that everyone is excited about. Anything less than a unanimous decision guarantees indifference, less patience when things go wrong ...

Flowers have long been used to convey our innermost feelings. Say it with flowers and you have a good chance of declaring your undying love and devotion to the woman or man of your dreams. These days it is common to gift flowers for Valentine's day, birthdays or anniversaries.

But who says we only have to gift flowers for obvious occasions.

Since I “came out” as an atheist, I’ve been getting lots of questions about why I changed and how I can justify it. This article series is intended to provide a starting point for discussing those questions.

Part one of this series dealt with my story of de-conversion. In this part, I’ll briefly outline what I think are the most convincing arguments against belief in the Christian faith. In part three, I’ll go a step further and explain why I reject belief in all deities.

This list of arguments is not meant to be comprehensive. A comprehensive list would require enough material to fill up several books. These are just brief introductions to the arguments that I personally find most convincing.

1. Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac in Genesis, chapter 22.

God himself commits an immoral act in this story by commanding Abraham to murder his only son, Isaac. Abraham is given no knowledge of God’s intent. He only knows that God wants his son as a sacrifice. Abraham obeys without questioning, but when Isaac is on the altar and Abraham has the knife in his hand, an angel appears and tells Abraham to abort the sacrifice.

Imagine that a good friend of yours comes to you and tells you about a tough situation that he’s in. He says that he heard God’s voice telling him to murder his son. Your friend loves his son, but he intends to go through with the murder because his devotion to God is greater than his love for his son.

What would be your response? Would you call the police, afraid that a terrible crime was about to be committed? Or would you encourage your friend to go ahead and obey the voice of God that he had heard?

The Abraham/Isaac scenario is only one place in the Bible that we find such amoral behavior by God. Here’s a small sample of others:

The story of Jephthah (Judges 11). Jephthah similarly is in a situation where he must sacrifice his daughter, but in t...

In this tutorial one of our senior members from our forums Japaslavian (Jeff Masamori over at Flickr) shares a simple photoshop technique for enhancing contrast.

This is probably the most useful little adjustment I’ve come across (in Photoshop) just playing around a few years ago. It has served me well, and I hope it will do the same for you all, as there is not a single photo I have ever taken that does not look better without it. NEVER.

Very very simple.

1. Image>Adjustments>Auto Levels
You could do the levels manually if you want to, but auto tends to do pretty much the same thing I would have done.

2. Duplicate your layer.
The shortcut is Command+J (control on a PC)

3. Image>Adjustments>Equalize
This function remaps your pixels to incorporate every range of brightness. So your brightest pixels will go white, and you darkest will go black. After this command, if you look at your histogram, it will almost be level all the way across. Your image will probably look like a really bad HDR-ish image, which is to be expected.

4. Set the equalized layer’s blending mode to Soft Light
You will notice that your image looks less bizarre and much more contrasty.

5. Drop the Soft Light layer’s opacity.
I always drop it down to between 30-35%, but you can try different opacities to fit your liking.

6. Merge the layers together, and you’re done!

Here’s an example of what it does.

Before

After/Edited

So there you have it. Give it a try.

Like I said, I’ve never taken a shot that this didn’t do miracles for.

Makes a great action as well.

How To Prepare a Mac For Sale

14 November 2008 · 17 Comments · apple, gear, howto, mac, osx

It’s time to upgrade your Mac, and you’re thinking about selling your old one. Over the years, I’ve sold many Macs, and I’ve created a set of steps to follow (and learned a few tricks) along the way that I’d like to share.

Following these steps will let you sleep a bit better at night and has the added benefit of creating a great first-experience for the buyer.

	Step One: Back It Up

Before you delete, reformat, or reinstall, back up your data. There’s little worse than realizing that the scan of the polaroid of you as a boy on the shoulders of a Philadelphia Eagles linebacker was lost during a destructive drive reformat.

Fortunately, there are lots of ways to backup your Mac. I detailed my setup in a an article I wrote in April of 2008 entitled Regarding Backups.

Whatever method you use, just make sure you backup, copy, or clone your data before you reformat and ship your Mac to its new home.

	Step Two: Deauthorize It

Since publishing this article, I’ve been reminded by a number of people that it’s a good idea to deauthorize iTunes. To quote Apple:

Deauthorizing a computer allows you to manage which computers can play music, videos, audiobooks, or other content purchased from the iTunes Store. [You can only] use your digital rights management (DRM)-protected music purchases from the iTunes Store on up to five different computers [...] when you play an item you’ve purchased, your computer is “authorized” to play content purchased using your Apple Account.

If you don’t deauthorize the system, it’s unlikely that the new owner will be able to play your tracks (they’d still need your iTunes sign-in information), but it could prevent you from playing your music on a future system, depending on how many computers you’ve authorized.

To deauthorize a computer, choose Store > Deauthorize Computer, and enter your iTunes account information.

	Step Three: Reformat and Reinstall

Cha...

Color co-ordination is definitely not one of my strong suits. Ask my girlfriend and she’ll tell you what a mess I make just picking out matching clothes. For anyone like me who’s basically ‘design-challenged’, here are two awesome tools which will help you get perfectly color coordinated.

Search Color Schemes (Use Words)

Picking out a color scheme for your website? Not sure how to describe the actual colors you need? Try out ‘Instant Color Schemes’.

This excellent free service makes it easy for anyone to find an entire matching color scheme simply by typing in a word. For example, just search for ’sunset’, and color schemes related to ’sunset’ will be made available on the spot.

“Instant Color Schemes” makes full use of Yahoo’s image search API. How it works is that they take 5 related images from Yahoo Image Search and then show the most prominent 6 colors from each image and then find related colors to come up with the color schemes.

After some testing, it does work out pretty well in most cases. It did give me abnormal results once in a while (along with yellow and orange, pink and grey colors were displayed to me when I searched for ‘curry’!), but it looks to be a good product overall.

Search Color Schemes (Use Images)

Lost for words? If you are, you can let your favorite image do the talking. Sometimes words don’t cut it. This is especially true when you’re trying to pick colors to match certain objects, a painting or a statue for instance. Just upload a picture to Color Palette Generator and it will break down the key colors from within that photo and allow you to obtain a color scheme from that image.

Also of note is the fact that the source code for this project is available for free which means you can grab it, change and modify the code and put it to good use as well.

So there you go, two tools which will help you make the right decision about colors - all the time.

Hi All,

I wanted to email this to someone from the iphone dev team for some feedback and discussion before posting but as I don't know how to contact them I'll post my findings to date here, and hopefully anyone else working on this problem can share their findings too.

Until Apple fixes it properly, I think I have a workaround for the infamous "Hangs on Apple Logo after installing/updating apps and needs restore" and an explanation of the root cause.

This is the problem where after a crash or restart during app install/update/uninstall the device will get stuck on the Apple (or pineapple ) boot screen and either spontaneously reboot after a while, or "freeze" requiring a two fingered reboot. On my ipod touch when this freeze occurs the display dims to half brightness and the unit is no longer pingable over wifi.

Usually you get stuck in a loop where no amount of forcibly rebooting will recover the device and you have to restore.

Here's the explanation: When the 3rd party application state changes, Springboard "regenerates the application map" which you can see clearly if you watch the system log with the iPhone Configuration Utility.

(Available here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...formacosx.html )

This can take some time. The more and/or bigger applications you have installed, the longer this takes. This regeneration process happens ANY time a change to installed applications occurs.

Here's the problem - Springboard is watched by a watchdog process which is handled by configd. The location of the watchdog and it's configuration files is /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/mobilewatchdog.bundle

The watchdog constantly monitors Springboard, and if it doesn't respond at least once every 2 minutes, it is killed and forcibly restarted. If this happens approximately 4 times, the watchdog will attempt to reboot the device, but it usually just freezes the system with the half brightness apple logo.

The problem occurs when the number and/or size of applications installed causes a regeneration ...

The fact that my wife and I both have iPhones is a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because well… we both have iPhones. But it’s also a curse. It has become another gadget to upgrade, to pimp up and gulp- to depreciate quickly . We were both going to get the 2nd generation iPhones but after weighting in the fact that the original ones are upgradable via software, it became hard to justify the cost of a whole new phone. Sorry, 2 new phones. So we opted for the software update, which gave us in a lot of ways a new phone. The upgrade was free, but the mostly inexpensive apps add up. This got me thinking about Fairplay, Apple’s DRM technology used throughout the iTunes store for music and now applications as well. Fairplay allows you to register up to 5 computers and unlimited iPods/iPhones synced to those computers. So… it should be easy for my wife and I to share iPhone apps with each other as long as both our iTunes are authorized to use them. All we need to do is authorize both accounts in both computers and re-download the apps. This could work in Windows, but why would I right?

Here’s a step by step tutorial on how to do it.

Scenario

I have 2 Macs, 2 iPhones, 2 iTunes accounts.

I used one account to buy a game, and another account to buy another one. The goal is to have both games playable on both phones legally with no hacks.

Solution

Have each computer be authorized for both accounts. Re-download apps on 2nd computer with 1st computer iTunes account.

Step 1: Authorize Computers

I step into my wife’s mac, launch iTunes, log out of her iTunes Store account and log in with mine.

Step 1: Log Out and In

Still inside iTunes, I go to the app store and click the Buy App button on the application I had bought in my computer.

Step 2: re-download

iTunes knows I already paid for this and just let’s be re-download it without charging me again.

Step 2: Confirm

The app then begins to d...

Getting started ...
1) Drive less

The best way to reduce fuel use is to drive less:

a) Live closer to work;
b) carpool;
c) bicycle;
d) walk;
e) take public transit

2) Park and ride (bicycle)

If part of your commute is not biker friendly, travel to a point that is and then bike the rest of the way.

The "park and ride" concept can also be applied to carpooling and mixed private/public transit travel.

3) Attend a driving clinic

Hybrid owners groups are popping up in cities around the world - and non-hybrid owners are often welcome to attend regular meetings. Fuel efficient driving techniques are commonly discussed, and clinics are sometimes offered by experienced members.

4) Clean junk from your trunk

The additional weight you carry in your vehicle doesn't ride for free. It takes energy to move it around. Removing unnecessary stuff from your vehicle saves fuel.

5) Let the most efficient driver drive

More than one licenced driver in the vehicle? Let the most efficient driver drive! And take the opportunity to learn from his/her wisdom.

6) Join a fuel economy forum

Join an outstanding forum to learn ways to increase your fuel economy by talking to others who share your enthusiasm and goals.

7) Remove unused roof racks

If your vehicle come with a roof rack and you don't use it, remove it. Same holds true for bike racks. Doing so will reduce aerodynamic drag, resulting in better fuel economy.

8) Check tire inflation regularly

Make sure that your tire pressures are, at minimum, set to manufacturer specifications. The higher the pressure, the less rolling resistance.

Remember that pressure is affected by ambient temperature. As temperature drops, so does your tire pressure, so keep track as the seasons change.

9) Track your fuel consumption

One of the first steps in improving efficiency is tracking fuel consumption.

Get in the habit of saving all your fuel receipts, recording distance travelled and fuel economy (MPG). Keep a small notebook to record trip type and new technique...

Recently I read a post on slimming down your wallet (via Lifehacker). As many of you I had my wallet filed with membership and other reward cards from the local hardware store the grocery shop and the rest of it. Some cards used regularly some used only once a year.

As mentioned in the post from the unclutterer most of the companies only need the number from the card. The magnetic strips are hardly used and the barcode is just a store for the number. So instead of writing down the numbers I scanned in the cards -front and back side- and stored them as images on my iPhone.

To test it out I went to the local hardware store and asked the girl behind the counter if she could scan the barcode from my phone. The first look I got was pure amazement. To her the physical card was transformed into a picture on a shiny device. On top of that the barcode was scanned successfully. The result; a slightly confused girl and a happy me.

The cards are stored as images in an iPhoto album that is synced with my iPhone through iTunes. Newly scanned cards are stored in the album and are automatically synced. When asked for the card I pull out my phone and open the "card" in full screen mode.

For iPhone Touch the same routine should work and it probably also works for an iPod with photo capabilities.

In my case I used my Mac to sync but this should also work on a Windows situation.

Now my wallet only contains three cards, credit card, debit card and the donor registration.

Most Americans receive a daily flood of junk mail. Some savvy citizens take a stand against the torrent. My friend Pam gets great delight from calling the sender of every catalog she receives in order to be removed from their mailing lists. This works well, but there are easier ways to deal with the problem. Here’s a list of four tools you can use to keep the marketers at bay.

OptOutPrescreen.com
OptOutPrescreen.com looks like it might be a phishing site at first. It’s not. It’s an official site established by the Consumer Credit Reporting Industry to allow consumers to opt-in or opt-out of credit offers. I did this the last time I posted about the service, and haven’t received a credit card offer in over a year!

When you complete your request, you can elect to either opt out of credit card offers for five years, or you can opt out forever. Not only will this keep your credit report and social security number from circulating to various companies, it will also cut down on the amount of junk mail you receive.

This is a legitimate site, endorsed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. (I wonder if similar sites exist in other countries? From the comments: The Canadian Marketing Association has a do-not-contact service. Canada will be launching a do-not-call list in Fall 2008.)

DMA’s Mail Preference Service
OptOutPrescreen.com will stop the credit card offers, but wouldn’t it be nice to stem the flood of other junk mail? You can at least put a finger in the dike by visiting the Direct Marketing Association’s Mail Preference Service. The DMA web site offers a menu of consumer information and preference services, including:

    the rest of your time?"

"I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children,
and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to
    see my friends, have
a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. I have a full life."

The American interrupted, "I have an MBA from
Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day.
    You can
    then sell the extra
fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat."

"And after that?" asked the Mexican.

"With the extra money the larger boat will bring,
you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire
    fleet of trawlers. Instead
of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with
the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave
this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York
City! From there you can direct your huge new enterprise."

"How long would that take?" asked the Mexican.

"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years," replied
    the American.

"And after that?"

"Afterwards? Well my friend, that's when it gets really interesting," answered
the American, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start
buying and selling stocks and make millions!"

"Millions? Really? And after that?" asked
    the Mexican.

"After that you'll be able to retire, live in
a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch
a few fish, take a siesta
with your wife and spend your evenings drinking...

At our old house, Kris and I were constantly at war with the little devils. Every time we suffered another invasion, every time they managed to find the pantry, every time they discovered the cat food, every time they ruined my chocolate chip cookies, I would berate them with colorful euphemisms.

Eventually it got so bad that we had to bring in an exterminator. It seemed crazy to hire an exterminator to deal with little sugar ants, but nothing else we tried would work. So we plopped down $100 every three months to keep the ants under control. (It may not have been $100 for each visit — Kris thinks it could have been $300.) It didn’t really help. After the exterminator visited, the ant problem would subside for a couple weeks, but then we’d be right back at war with them again.

Sad but true: the ants were one of the reasons I wanted to move out of that house.

I hate ants.

We’ve been lucky at our new house. In the almost four years that we’ve lived here, we haven’t had an ant problem.

Then on Tuesday night Kris asked, “Why is there an ant highway at the bottom of the stairs?” In our secret couple-language, an “ant highway” is the long teeming swarm of ants running from their point of origin to whatever it is they’ve decided they’re hungry for. Kris followed the ants to their destination; I traced them to their source. They were traveling through four rooms to find their treasure: a sticky mess I had made on the kitchen floor. There were hundreds (thousands?) of ants feasting on hunk of goo.

I berated the little bastards with colorful euphemisms.

But I didn’t call the exterminator. Kris and I are older and wiser now. We’ve learned that we don’t have to pay $100 to get rid of the ants. Instead, we use about one dollar’s ...

A staple in most homes, citrus fruit, including oranges, lemons and limes, makes a beautiful, fragrant display that can piled in a bowl. We also like to use them in a flower arrangement. Peeking out from the bottom of a clear glass container, they serve a dual purpose: beauty and as an anchor to an arrangement. They're also handy to have around the house for the reasons we've gathered together here...

If you don't have the citrus suggested, use whichever one you have on hand (although we'd suggest sticking with lemon juice when the objective's bleaching):

Polish copper by rubbing it with a lemon juice soaked cloth and buffing it dry.

Brass and aluminum can be polished with a paste of lemon juice and cream of tartar. Another way to polish brass is by sprinkling salt on half of a lemon and rubbing it on the brass item. This method works on stainless steel as well.

Rub lemon on your faucets to remove lime scale, hard water stains, and soap residue. It also works on porcelain.

Whiten tennis shoes by spraying them with lemon juice and placing them in the sun

For a mild, stain-free bleach, soak your delicates in a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda for at least half an hour before washing.

Boost your laundry detergent’s power by adding lemon juice to a wash cycle for fresh smelling laundry, to brighten whites and remove rust and mineral stains.

Remove unsightly underarm stains from shirts and blouses simply by scrubbing them with a mixture of equal parts lemon juice (or white vinegar) and water.

To get rid of mildew on clothes, make a paste of lemon juice and salt and rub it on the affected area, then dry the clothes in sunlight. Repeat the process until the stain is gone. This works well for rust stains on clothes too.

Innumerable books and other media extol the virtues of eating food that's grown and processed near you: it benefits the planet, it benefits the farmers, it tastes better, it's better for you. Read Michael Pollan or Barbara Kingsolver for examples.

But piecing together a local menu isn't as easy as going to the Local aisle of your supermarket. Here are some tips for bringing your meals closer to home.

Start small. Shopping locally goes against the grain (pun intended) of our globalized economy, so it's not the easiest thing to do. Even if you live in a region that's rich in vegetables and meats, chances are you won't have easy access to staples like sugar, salt, oil, and flour. Just focus on what you can get, and keep an eye out for sources and/or substitutes for what you can't.

Personalize. If you want to try the classic 100-mile diet, you can find your personal 100-mile radius at 100milediet.org.

Get a supplier. You can find farms, greenmarkets, and locally oriented stores in your area using web tools offered at Eatwellguide.org and Localharvest.org. If you live in a city, investigate CSA -- Community-Supported Agriculture. Citydwellers pay a fee to subscribe to a farm, and get a share of its output delivered in weekly boxes of joy. Just Food offers a listing for New Yorkers.

Assure authenticity of local supplier. Some so-called farmers markets allow vendors to resell wholesale produce to unsuspecting consumers. The best markets, in contrast, are producer-only markets with rules that prohibit reselling. There are resources on the Web that can help you distinguish real farmers markets...
