13" and 15" MacBook Pros Have a Slower SATA Interface

Sunday June 14, 2009 03:53 PM EST; Category: MacBook Pro, MacBook
Written by Arnold Kim

As first described in our forums, Apple seems to have quietly downgraded the SATA Interface from 3.0Gbit to 1.5Gbit speeds in some of the new MacBook Pros introduced last week. Readers are reporting that both the new 13" and 15" MacBook Pro models are affected while the 13" MacBook (white), 17" MacBook Pro and 13" MacBook Air retain the 3.0Gbit SATA interface. SATA is the interface between a computer and its hard drives.

The slower SATA interface is unlikely to affect the bulk of users as even the fastest traditional hard drives are unable to saturate even the 1.5 Gbit interfaces. However, if you are planning on buying a fast Solid State Drive (SSD), it could affect the drive's performance. The downgrade of the interface in the new MacBook Pro has also been confirmed in early benchmarks using a fast enough SSD. Forum user fpnc provides an excellent summary of the findings so far:

1.) It appears nearly certain that the new 13" and 15" MacBook Pros are all reporting a SATA interface running at 1.5Gb and not the faster 3.0Gb rate that has been in pretty common use for the last few years. These new models have the Secure Digital (SD) slot and also appear to have redesigned motherboards.

2.) Those who are using standard hard disk drives will probably see no difference in performance. If that is you, you can stop reading now.

3.) Benchmarks on FAST solid-state drives (SSDs) are showing a decrease in RAW disk i/o transfer rates on these same systems (in comparison to the previous generation MacBook Pros and MacBooks).

4.) The largest differences in the benchmark results seem to be in large, sequential disk READS (one of the traditional strengths with SSDs).

5.) To the best of my knowledge, no one has done any test with REAL-WORL...

The Enterprise Impact of Cloud Computing

Gary Orenstein | Sunday, April 12, 2009 | 9:00 AM PT | 2 comments

Both sides of cloud computing’s “enterprise readiness” debate are likely to have merit for years to come, as security, data portability and data accessibility represent just some of the issues that still need to be ironed out. But no matter which side you favor, I see two areas of cloud computing, at least in terms of the enterprise, as a fait accompli. These are undeniable truths about the state of information technology, from the cloud to the enterprise, that will impact how businesses and individuals make decisions.

Pricing Transparency — Prepare Your Pencils

Whether businesses jump into cloud computing right away or later on, the pricing transparency from cloud providers completely changes enterprise practices for benchmarking IT costs. Companies routinely spend big bucks to understand IT expenses and effectiveness. Top-line ratios based on R&D dollars to revenue are easy to find in SEC filings, but more detailed metrics were part art, part science, shrouded in a murky haze of corporate intelligence.

Cloud computing has changed all of that. Now you can understand exactly how much it costs to rent an x86 server, a terabyte of storage, or a content delivery service with just a few clicks to Amazon Web Services or a host of other providers. Transparency can be granular, too. Amazon S3 now differentiates between storage capacity, data transfer in and out, and number of individual requests.

Whether you use these services today, tomorrow, or far off in the future, measuring the costs and rewards of technology investments will never be the same.

Departmental Decisions — “The Outerprise”

It used to be that deploying a new application meant days or weeks of research, approvals, budgeting, planning and setup. Now it means that individuals outside ...

Last week I came across an article in NetworkWorld.com that listed today’s “Top 10 Technology skills.” The list was based on work done by Foote Partners, which conducts quarterly assessments of IT pay trends in the US.

Foote Partners’ CEO David Foote says “what’s unique about this downturn is that IT departments are hiring talent in certain areas – such as business process modeling and project management – while laying off in others connected to weak product lines.”

And, indeed, coming in at the top of the list was Business Process Modeling:

1. Business Process Modeling

Business process management, methodology and modeling is one of the few IT niches that saw pay gains in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to the quarterly IT salary survey compiled by Foote Partners. In particular, companies were willing to pay for workers with ITIL IT best practices and CobiT IT governance experience. Pay for these skills was up 10.3% from a year ago and 5.6% from the previous quarter, the Foote report says.

Kevin Faughnan, director of IBM’s Academic Initiative, says business process modeling is one of the key skills that business majors should be studying. “It’s about how does our business work, what are the business processes and how do we analyze them,” Faughnan says, adding that this is a key issue for companies to consider before applying IT to solve business problems.

This seems to make sense to me. It is always important to know your business processes in order to be able to modify and refine them to keep pace with change… and today there is an extra helping of change that we all must not only keep pace with but get ahead of. Business Process Modeling is a key first step.

And the rest…

For the curious, the other 9 skills were:

2. Database

3. Messaging/Communications

4. IT Architecture

5. IT Security

6. Project Management

7. Data Mining

8. Web Development

9. IT Optimization

10. Ne...

The Top Five BPM Starting Points Today

Many of our clients are asking where to start with BPM. Strategically, we advise to work on a large scoped end to end process that is important to your organization after a try with something smaller in scope to build confidence, but the economic reality for those organizations that are trying to ride out the economic storm is different. I’d like to suggest some good starting points

Leveraging Process Discovery:

Organizations can deliver some quick hit benefits by either modeling or measuring existing processes. Quite often business folks can find ways to stream line processes by examining them. It could be a facilitated session to agree on what the process should be and make changes from there. This is a quick hit technique. Quite often, folks discover unnecessary and/or better shadow processes while doing a quick process discovery effort.

Focusing on Pay-outs:

Cash is king today and any process that involves pay-outs is a great place to start: This has the double win of identifying pay-outs th...

Time to introduce a new TLA (Three Letter Acronym) to this blog: BPV - Business Process Visualization.

I often sum up basics of BPM (Business Process Management) with the following pitch:

Model your Process

Manage your Process

Monitor your Process

iMprove your Process

For me, the enabling factor for BPM was the Executable Process Diagram. Use tools to graphically depict the Activities and Flows of a Process, and then auto-generate the software necessary to manage the transitions between those Activities.

With any good BPM Suite I can rest assured that the Right People will Execute the Right Activities at the Right Time to keep my Processes Flowing Smoothly.

The BPM Industry has more than met the PFS (Processes Flow Smoothly) challenge - The decision for a company to adopt BPM technology and methodology is pretty much a no-brainer (Which suite to adopt may require some thought, but whether or not to adopt isn't even an issue any more).

So what's next?

In a recent post I attempted to describe a BPMS in terms that might have been familiar to any 19th Century businessman . One of the comments I received really peaked my interest:

Roeland Loggen said...
Maybe your story reflects one of the key issues with current BPM thinking: if the software provides automated concepts of a year 1890 shopfloor, then not much innovation has been created. Since 1890 many many new ideas have been created on people working in processes. The mechanistic view of typical BPM software has not clue of these more modern concepts.
The 20th century knowledge worker's reality and productivity is muh different from Taylor based process thinking... not based on orchestration, central coordination, workflow items, inbox/task screen.... but adhoc, collaboration, changing processes on the fly based on new insights and events.....

Business Process Modeling Notation

The Business Process Modeling Notation is a standardization graphical notation for enterprise processes. It was developed under the leadership of Steven White in a working group at BPMI.org. The first public release (Version 1.0) can be found on the BPMN website.

Jean-Jacques Dubray maintains a nice page on BPMN, and has posted an interesting proposal for a business process meta model.

Here are a few first impressions. I offer these impressions as constructive criticism, BTW, not pot-shots. I want to see CMIS succeed. Which also means I want to see it done right.

The v0.5 draft doc for the Domain Model says there are four top-level ("first class", root) object types: Document, Folder, Relationship, and Policy. (Support for the Policy type is optional. So there are basically three root types.)

Already I question whether there shouldn't perhaps be a top-level object type ("CMISObject") that everything inherits from, rather than four root objects, since presumably all four basic object types will share at least a few characteristics in common. But maybe not.

Page 16 of the Part I doc says that Administration is out of scope for CMIS. But later on, we learn that "A policy object represents an administrative policy that can be enforced by a repository." We also find applyPolicy and removePolicy operations, which are clearly administrative in intent.

Remarkably, Policy objects can be manipulated through standard CMIS CRUD operations but do not have a content stream and are not versionable. However, they "may be" fileable, queryable, or controllable. Why are we treating this object as a file ("fileable") but not allowing it to be versionable? And why are we pretending it doesn't have a content stream? And why are we saying "may be"? This is too much fuzziness, it seems to me.

Right now, the way CMIS Part I is worded, a "policy" can be anythi...

Webinar: Dynamic BPM platforms

Clay Richardson of Forrester and Keith Swenson of Fujitsu gave a webinar this afternoon on dynamic BPM platforms. There will be a replay available; I’ll update this post with the link when I get it, or someone can add it to the comments if they get it first.

Richardson started with some fairly generic research by Forrester on business problems such as cross-functional processes and process agility, then defined a dynamic business process as one that is built for change and adaptable to the business context. There’s also a significant collaboration/social software message, where dynamic BPM requires both a high degree of collaboration as well as a high degree of information support.

As he points out, most BPM only tackles the structured parts of a process, but doesn’t interface with things such as personal reminder lists, external email and instant messaging. The entire business process does include those things; it’s just that most organizations are using manual, ad hoc methods to integrate between structured systems (including most BPM) and unstructured activities and systems. He stratifies this into three parallel types of work: ad hoc human activities, structured human activities, and system-intensive processes. Although many BPM solutions can do the latter two, many organizations use very different tools for purely system-to-system interactions than they do for processes that contain human-facing steps.

He stated that dynamic BPM is able to handle ad hoc and collaboration scenarios in the context of a more structured business process: being able to blend structured and unstructured work. This allows knowledge workers to do work on their own terms using the tools that they choose, but by doing this in the context of dynamic BPM, visibility into these ad hoc processes is maintained. In the course of providing this visibility, it also feeds back information to IT on how the processes are executed, allowing for these to potentially be structured and standardized where appropriate...

AIIM has released its annual State of the ECM Industry research report. And although the term Enterprise Content Management was coined about eight years ago, the research findings are still not very optimistic in some areas.

Not surprisingly, the bottom line is that electronic content in many of its shapes and forms in the organizational landscape is still (mainly) a mess.

Enterprise Content Management Circa 2009

AIIM has found that managing electronic documents is still a challenge for a whopping 47% of organizations. On top of that, business communication channels like IMs, text messages, blogs and wikis are uncontrolled and off the corporate radar for 75% of businesses.

Other key findings include:

55% of organizations having little or no confidence that important e-mails are recorded and retrievable.

28% of organizations would take more than a month to produce documents for a legal eDiscovery.

In 29% of organizations, SharePoint is competing with existing Enterprise CMS, Document Management (DM) or Records Management (RM) suites, while 6% integrated it with existing systems.

The single ECM system concept is still alive in 35% of organizations, whereas 33% plan to use a single sign-on portal to access multiple repositories. (This is when a to-be standard CMIS could play a positive role.)

License sales in the main areas of DM and RM are set to hold steady in 2009.

Only 52% of respondents have measured the ROI and done cost analysis before and after their DM/RM projects.

So it doesn’t sound like either will work? not true.

My approach is to start with high-level to-be modelling. This often involves developing a future state, Process Architecture - aligning the organisations strategic goals with it’s process management goals. Further detail can be added about key processes in the form of IGOE Process Scope models (more on these in future posts).

When agreement has been reached on the future state, then we can go back and look at the as-is. This is limited to the processes th...

If you want the fastest possible wireless network, and you have all N-compatible clients, then on your AirPort Base Station, set the following options:

Radio Mode: 802.11n only (5GHz)

In the Wireless Options section, insure that Wide Channels are selected

Other vendors use wide channels in the 2.4GHz spectrum, but this is a problem as doing so can use up to 75% of this spectrum. Not great if you have a cordless phone, or neighbors that are also using 2.4GHz hardware mentioned above. As the 5GHz the channels don't overlap like they do in the 2.4GHz range, then this can be done. In 2.4GHz, if you wanted to have three non-interfering networks, they would each have to be five channels apart so that they don't overlap -- 1,6,11 for example.

You should get speeds up to 500MB per minute between two 802.11n clients with this setup.

[robg adds: I don't know if these are ideal settings or not -- if you have advice on setting up the fastest N-only network, please add your comments.]

Use Secrets to greatly simplify 'defaults write' hints
Wed, Dec 24 2008 at 7:30AM PST • Submitted by

If you're not aware of it, Secrets is a preference pane that makes it easy to implement the many different defaults write modifications that exist for both Apple and third-party applications. I haven't checked out every entry in the program, but I suspect that it has the vast majority of the defaults write hints we've posted here over the years. Once installed, you can see modifications by program, and easily update the list to show the newest additions. You can even add a secret to the database yourself, if you discover a new one.

The upside of using Secrets is that you don't need any Terminal skill to use it, and you don't need to remember any obscure defaults write commands. There's not really any downside to using Secrets, other than perhaps not having the knowledge of what the program is doing, in case it ever goes away.

In browsing the Secrets database, I've found a few entries that haven't been listed here on macosxhints over the years. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be posting the most interesting looking of those commands as standalone hints. Why, you might ask, if theyr'e in Secrets already? Because long ago, when I started the site, I wanted it to make sure it was a collection of data, and not just a collection of links to other sites and programs -- that way, regardless of what happens to other sites and/or apps, the raw 'how to' data would be here for those who wanted to use it. As I post these defaults hints, I'll include a link to this post, explaining that there is an easier way to accomplish what the hint does.

Going forward, if I receive any additional defaults hints, I'll try to remember to do the same thing -- so that not only is the "how to" knowledge collected, but those who want a simpler solution will have it at hand as well. But...
