For most Californians, the notion of mountains conjures up the vast Sierra Nevada. In contrast, the Trinities are relatively pocket-sized. Sixty miles southwest of Mount Shasta and a five-hour drive from the San Francisco Bay area, the region exudes an off-the-beaten-path feel of a place that time is in the process of forgetting.

I have been in the Trinities in every season. The mountains empty out after Labor Day, but they retain their beauty and they remain unspoiled. In years when winter arrives late, I have hiked there well into December. Later there is great cross-country skiing, which lasts until summer.

Lore has it that there are really three Trinities: red, green and white.

Driving up Highway 3 from the mountain hamlet of Weaverville, it is easy to find the red Trinities in slashes that the road chisels into the rock, revealing the rich hues of igneous peridotite soils found on the eastern slopes. Large swaths of the range provide the green, places where you can walk on seemingly endless vanilla-scented trails under a dense canopy of emerald firs and pines.

The crown jewels of this wilderness area, however, are the white Trinities, named for the white granite reminiscent of the Sierras. They lie at the very heart of the mountains, reachable by car only over a 20-mile stretch of the mostly gravel Coffee Creek Road.

IT was a crisp Sunday afternoon, and the narrow terrace of Casa Garcia, a small seafood restaurant in the Moroccan port town of Asilah, exuded a rarefied air. Fashionable Moroccans in big designer sunglasses feasted on grilled fish, while a party of British women exchanged air kisses. All around, waiters in white jackets and skinny black bow ties weaved between the white-tableclothed tables, serving bottles of chilled white wine and luscious bowls of fresh clams.

While such scenes of glamour have burnished Asilah’s reputation as a stylish playground for North Africa’s elite, it wasn’t long ago that this ancient fortified port, about 30 miles south of Tangier along the balmy Atlantic Ocean, suffered from obscurity.

Moroccan guidebooks written before the late 1970s only mentioned Asilah in passing, usually as a curiosity. But in the last few years, Asilah’s medina has become a clandestine getaway for Moroccan and European jet-setters who hide behind the thick carved doors of their exotic holiday homes, lounging on electric-blue roof terraces with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other.

Much of the turnaround can be traced to 1978, when two local friends — Mohammed Benaissa, a photographer and diplomat, and Mohammed Melehi, an artist and curator — came up with the idea of inviting artists to paint murals on the town’s peeling walls. That grew into a summer-long arts festival, with flamenco concerts, design exhibitio...

Evans, a 31-year-old Australian rider for the Silence-Lotto team, is widely considered to be the favorite to win the 95th edition of the Tour de France, which begins Saturday here, on the coast of Brittany. But rather than having earned the title of race favorite because of his dominant riding style, Evans is the favorite almost by default.

Last year’s winner, Alberto Contador, and third-place finisher, Levi Leipheimer, are not at the race this year, because their Astana team was barred by the Tour organizers because of the team’s doping problems last year. (Contador and Leipheimer rode for Discovery Channel last year, moving to Astana before the team’s exclusion was announced.)

Only two other men at this year’s race have ever finished in the top three at the Tour: Oscar Pereiro, 30, who rides for the Caisse d’Epargne team, finished second in 2006 before being moved up to first place when Floyd Landis failed a drug test, and Carlos Sastre, 33, of CSC-Saxo Bank, who finished fourth that year and subsequently moved up to third.

None of this means that Evans is unfit for victory. He beat Contador by more than a minute in each of the two time trials in last year’s race, and he was usually able to stay with Contador on all but the steepest mountain climbs. He finished the Tour only 23 seconds behind the winner, and 20 of those seconds were accounted for by a time bonus Contador receiv...

Across Cyprus by Pluck and Thumb

The gymnasium at the Salamis Ruins.

The Kosk Pansiyon, a traditional guesthouse on the east coast of Cyprus, is the second-worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Dark and depressing, four creaky beds to a room, and an open-window “air-conditioning” system that wouldn’t have been so bad if there had been a breeze — or, for that matter, a screen to keep the mosquitoes out. And let’s not even discuss the toilets.

Throughout the sweaty, sleepless night I spent there, I consoled myself with a single thought: I was paying only 10 Turkish liras (about $8.16 at 1.23 liras to the dollar) for this experience. Well, 13 if I wanted a shower in the morning.

Ozzie at the Kosk Pansiyon.

The Kosk (90-392-366-5588), in the old city of Famagusta, was not, however, the worst hotel ever, and for one simple reason: Ozzie, the manager, a tattooed Turkish Cypriot whose ineradicable grin showed off his few remaining teeth and whose accent betrayed the 19 years he’d spent in Australia. Ozzie fed me watermelon, showed me his garden of almond trees and chili peppers, fetched me a fresh towel, shampoo and soap for my shower, and was so genuinely friendly that I had to overlook the Kosk’s obvious deficits.

It was exactly Ozzie’s brand of hospitality that I needed, since I would be hitchhiking my way through this guitar-shaped island in the Mediterranean. Relying on the kindness of strangers, I wanted to travel from Nicosia, the capital, to the northeastern tip of the Karpaz Peninsula, where I might look across the sea and perhaps catch a glimpse of Syria, just 60 miles away. If I happened upon a Greek or Roman ruin along the way, I’d hit a Grand Tour twofer — Classical civilizations plus the Holy Lands (sort of), all on one Puerto Rico-size island.

But my 100-mile pilgrimage by thumb was also of necessity. I had overspent getting to Cyprus from Malta: the only flight, operated by Emirates, was 156.75 euros (about $252 at $1.61 to the euro). And when I arrived at Larnaca Airport around 7:30 p.m. on Wedn...

Jericoacora has been declared by the Washington Post as one of the world’s best beaches and is considered by Brazilians as the best beach in Brazil.

Do you dream about Jericoacoara?
Why not make that dream a reality?

Jericoacoara a little village on the north-east coast of Brazil, built on a sand dune. Located just south of the equator, Jericoacoara is paradise on earth. Thanks to trade winds and a dream climate, windsurfing conditions are ideal for all levels. “Jeri” is with no doubt the perfect spot to initiate oneself riding the waves, but there are opportunities for all levels. It is considered by many as the best location in the world to windsurf.

Jericoacoara is a quaint fishing village located on the northeastern coast of Brazil, in the state of Ceara, 300kms West of Fortaleza. .

The town originally gained fame as being one of the most beautiful in the world. Now it is also known for its other marvel of nature, the Wind.

What you can expect to find

PROTECTION LAWS
Due to the building restrictions and protection laws, Jeri is growing in a positive way. Business owners who are compliant and wish to match Jeri's beauty and simplicity have been creating small and cozy pousadas, which offer charm and sophistication rather then grandeur and extravagance.

JOURNEY
Another reason for Jeri being able to maintain its unhurried and peaceful way of life is the exceptional journey one takes to get there. Because of Jeri's remote location, the last 2 hours of the trip has to be traversed by 4 wheel drive vehicles which pass along rugged dirt roads and finally along the last stretch of sandy beach. It is a thrilling ride that certainly adds to the expereince as well as helping to keep herds of tour buses at bay. You can still watch daily as fishermen head out to sea in their traditional 'jangada' boats, in the same way they have for so many years before and hopefully henceforth.

			STREETS OF SAND
With streets paved with sand, life takes on a much slower pace. No traffic, no line ups, no honking, no stress. Sometimes taht simplicity comes at a cost, on occasion you might find the grocery stores supply of diet coke depleted forcing you to take a fresh suco instead. Or, you may have to share the road with a meandering mule or cow while wandering back to your pousada and upon occasion you might be forced to dine by candle light due to a brief power out. However, if you think you can cope with these trifles; you're ...

The ancient fortified town of Essaouira offers a unique mixture of culture and Atlantic sailing conditions. This pretty whitewashed town has been a thriving port for fifteen centuries, and is steeped in history offering an exciting and enchanting holiday destination.

Essaouira has been a magnet for poets, artists and craftsmen since the eighteenth century so the tiny streets are crammed with local pottery and handicrafts. In the evening the fisherman come back to port in their brightly painted boats, their nets bursting with sardines, and people jostle on the quays to buy the fresh fish. You won't find anything fresher for dinner!
Canoa:
Close to Rife and inside Murdeira's bay, Canoa is the easy and safe spot of Sal. Wind is side/side off, waves are small and easy to surf, no difficult shorebreak. This easy riding spot is ideal for all riders.

Albatros (Ponta Leme):
Located close to the fine hotels and residences of Santa Maria, this is also an easy spot. Most of the time, water is flat and wind is constant and coming from the left, sideshore or side-offshore. When the swell is south, it creates a long wave, safe and easy to ride. In case of problem, zodiac rescue is possible.

Santa Maria:
This spot is locatd at the East of the bay of Santa Maria, but it's possible to start from Albatros beach. The wind is sideshore to side-onshore. The wave is easy to ride, but far from the point, there's a risk of strong current, windless and big windswell.
Click here to get a panorama vieaw of the bay of Santa Maria

Ponta Preta:
Ponta Preta is my playground!
For me and for many others riders -famous or not- this is one of the very best windsurfing place of the planet!
If oceanswell is coming from the west, the waves will build up at ponta Preta higher than anywhere on the island.
The wave can be pretty big (up to 5 meters), it starts breaking very far from the beach, rolls glassy on a few hundred meters and finishes as a big shorebreak on the white sand. Most of the time, the wind is side-offshore and coming from the right.
Don't try it if you're not feeling confident in big waves combined with light (and sometimes gusty) wind! Any sailing mistake can leads you directly in the black rocks. But this is is the place where you can find the best surfing vibe, even as a witness standing on the beach.Check the galleries to see ac...

Far removed from the beaches that attract most tourists to Cyprus, the southern part of the divided city of Nicosia has an authentic, old-world charm, especially in the web of ancient streets within the star-shaped 16th-century ramparts that ring the Old City. Here, there are numerous craft shops (selling pottery, rugs, jewellery, baskets, and, in particular, the handmade lace of Lefkara), plus plenty of atmospheric restaurants and bars - especially in the pedestrianised area called Laiki Geitonia. Old Nicosia contains two of the country's leading museums: the Cyprus Museum (see below), and the magnificent collection of Orthodox icons and mosaics at the Byzantine Museum (at the Archbishop Makarios Cultural Centre). Also of interest is the House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios, a supremely rich late 18th-century dragoman (mediator between the Greek and Turkish communities), with finely restored rooms and an ethnological collection of Cypriot artefacts. Traditional costumes, furniture and other domestic artefacts can also be found at the Folk Art Museum. The main church is the small Cathedral of St John (Agios Ioannis) decorated with fine 18th-century frescoes.

2. Cyprus Museum, Nicosia

Cyprus has an extraordinary history spanning 10,000 years of human settlement. This can be witnessed at the numerous archaeological sites on the island, but many of the most precious and revealing artefacts have been lodged here - from Stone Age tools and Bronze Age pottery figurines to Greek sculpture and vases, and Roman jewellery, mosaics and statues.

3. Pierides Foundation Museum, Larnaca

During the early 19th century, Cyprus's archaeological sites were being stripped of treasures to sell into the voracious international market for antiquities. In 1839 Demitrios Pierides set up a foundation to stem this flow, through acquisition - a tradition maintained by the Pierides family through five generations. The result is ...

Northern Cyprus

For many people, the quieter pace and less-developed tourism of Northern Cyprus gives it a special charm. But Northern Cyprus is keen to exploit its tourist potential, and some of the coastal resorts are destined to change rapidly in the not-too-distant future.

			Nicosia

North Nicosia (also known as Lefkosa) has many of the authentic charms of its southern half, with its web of ancient streets within the Venetian city walls. The main attraction is the Selima Mosque, built originally as a Christian cathedral, but converted into a mosque in 1570. Also of interest is the Büyük Han, the old Ottoman caravanserai (inn for merchants), dating from 1572, now restored as a commercial centre and arts venue.

Kyrenia

Located at the centre of Northern Cyprus's long coastline, Kyrenia (or Girne) is its chief toruist resort, centring on an attractive harbour. The impressive hulk of Kyrenia Castle stands witness to its long and turbulent history as a strategic port: probably Byzantine in origin, it was taken by Richard the Lionheart in 1191; it was subsequently was rebuilt by the Venetians, and served as a fortress and prison for all subsequent rulers of the land. The castle's shipwreck museum includes the remains of a wooden merchant ship that sank in about 300 BC, loaded with a cargo packed in hundreds of amphorae (pottery jars); it was raised from the seabed in 1967. To the south of Kyrenia are two impressive ruins, St Hilarion Castle (see below), and Bellapais Abbey, a Gothic abbey built by the Augustinians at the start of the 13th century.

Famagusta

Positioned on the border between Northern and Southern Cyprus, the once-great eastern port of Famagusta has suffered since partition, and is a ghost of its former self. The Venetians fortified the city with ramparts, while the Ottomans turned the Cathedral of St Nicholas into the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque.

Salamis

Lying to the north of Famagusta, this is the best of all of Cyprus's ruined cities. Founded in about 1000 BC by the Mycenaeans, ...

Beaches and Activities

As a relatively small island, Cyprus is a perfect destination for a beach holiday. Along with white sand and clear blue seas, its beach resorts also host a good range of watersports.

The beaches listed are all in Southern Cyprus. Those in the north are dealt with in the separate article on Northern Cyprus.

Best beaches

Makronissos, near Agia Napa

Protoras, a quieter set of beaches on the other side of the peninsula from Agia Napa. 'Fig Tree Beach' is the most famous of these.

Governor's Beach, near Zygi

Coral Bay, north of Paphos

Lara Beach, on the southern stretch of the Akamas Peninsula

Asprokremos Beach, on the northern side of the Akamas Penisula, near Lakki

Activities

Watersports. At the equipped beaches (e.g. Agia Napa, Limassol, Larnaca), these include waterskiing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, jetskiing and parascending.

Sailing. From Larnaca, Limassol, Agia Napa, Lakki.

Waterparks. Pools, shoots and slides, rafts and fountains at Fasouri Watermania Waterpark, near Limassol, Aphrodite Waterpark, near Paphos; and WaterWorld, near Agia Napa.

Diving. There's rewarding snorkelling off many of the beaches on the island, but notably round the coves and islets of the Akamas Peninsula. Scuba-diving centres can be found at Agia Napa, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos; there are several wreck dives, the most famous of which is the Zenobia, off Larnaca (see Top Ten Things to Do).

Walking. There are some 50 marked trails in Southern Cyprus, such as the Adonis Trail near Lakki (Akamas Peninsula), and the Atalante Trail in the Troodos Mountains.

Golf. There are a number of excellent courses, especially in the south-west, near Paphos, such as Tsada Golf Club, Aphrodite Hills, and Secret Valley (near Petra tou Romiou).

Cycling. There are mountainbike trails in various parts of the island, and particularly in the Troodos Mountains.

Skiing. January to March in the Troodos Mountains.

Kafenio

No Cypriot village is complete without a traditional coffee shop, the ‘kafenio’
Its the most important place in the village, the central point of communication, a place to meet friends, to play ‘Tavli’, the Greek version of Backgammon or just pass time by drinking a Greek coffee, tea, fresh juice or a home-made fruit squash. Greek coffee is ordered ‘sketo’, ‘metrio’ or ‘glyko’. Here is how to make it.

Using a cup of coffee as measure pour water into a small coffee pan.

Bring the water to the boil.

For a ‘sketo’ put one to two teaspoons of coffee into the boiling water and stir well, until it froths up.
For a ‘metrio’ add one spoon of sugar.
For a ‘glyko’ add two spoons of sugar.

Coffee is always served with a glass of cold water.

Each ‘kafenio’ has its own individual way of making coffee, so be to be sure of what you will receive, it is best to state the number of sugars you want whilst ordering!

In case you are invited to someone’s house to drink a coffee, don’t be surprised if they turn their cups upside down onto the saucer after drinking the coffee. There are some people that say they can read your future from the coffee drains. Don’t be afraid to let them do it... it’s a nice way to start some small talk, and of course it depends on you how seriously you take the predictions!

      Meze

A Cyprus Meze is certainly one of the most famous Cypriot delicacies. Or to put it another way: Mezedes are a great number of different Cypriot delicacies. Eating a Meze is one of the ‘musts’
on any visit to Cyprus, and is a great guide to understanding the Cypriot mentality. Take your time and share a Meze with friends; don’t be surprised at how long it takes and how much food is offered, ‘siga, siga!’ ‘Slowly, slowly!’ as they say in Cyprus. Mezedes can include up to 20-30 dishes! Its a great way to enjoy a friend’s company, have a few drinks and last but not least enjoy the many different...
